The High Court says that your life time girl friend is as good as your wife.

The High Court has recognised lifelong domestic partnerships between heterosexual people on a similar footing to marriage.

Judge Dennis Davis said in a judgment last week that the Maintenance of SurvivingSpouses Act must be read to include the surviving partner of a life partnership and added that marriage for the purposes of this Act shall include a permanent life partnership.

The application was brought by Ethel Robinson, who was involved in a monogamous life partnership for 15 years with Cape Town attorney, Archie Shandling, who died on 14 December 2001.

Shandling left a will but made no sufficient provision for the maintenance of Robinson in it.

Research has shown that more than 1-million South Africans (and probability more than that) are in non-marital relationships with their intimate partners.

The case will now go to the Constitutional Court for confirmation.

I wonder what the judge is going too say about that escort whom you have dated for the last 15 years or that mistress whom you supported fro the last 12 years?

I recon; the bigger the estate of the deceased, the more (types of) contenders there will be.
